But my friends, FX is the mother of all assets. When I made the move from Futures to Spot it was a massive leap of faith. The new shop I worked at assured me that all I needed to do is follow the same rules. Yeah right.
Let me give you an example. If you fat finger on Futures with 500 lots on EURUSD you might get half of it rejected from the exchange, or worse still you might get a bad fill with a wide spread making you as poor as a church mouse. Too many of these and you get a tap on the shoulder by the head of risk.
If you fat finger in Spot FX the same amount (50 million USD) you get DONE.
Now keep in mind that is just with 1 extra zero.
If like me you had a nervous tick and fresh out of the Futures pit it can cause your gut to do unusual gymnastics.
What I learnt from guys who ran tier 1 desks was priceless. They-look-at-everything from rates to CB policy. From Crosses to steepeners. From FED voting rights to USD positioning but they best bit is how they manage risk. They need to survive when the market throws a tantrum at them. Why ? Because they can survive a nuclear economic fall out.
